Engaging Discussions :: part IV

As you start to get a sense of your overall wedding vision, you’ll need to discuss your wedding ceremony plans.

Your wedding ceremony is ‘what the wedding day is about’. It’s the reason for the celebration of your union.

Will your wedding ceremony be a religious ceremony or a civic (government) wedding?

If you choose a religious ceremony – it may be easy if you both currently attend the same church and the church suits your wedding needs (size, availability, etc). If you are of different religions or not currently attending a parish, then the answers may not be as easy to find. There are a number of churches open to all faiths that may be an option. You may choose to focus your ceremony (and possibly your marriage) towards one particular faith. Every month I assist couples determine the type of ceremony that is respectful of both of their backgrounds and how to combine the two faiths together if needed – this can quickly become a hot issue for many couples.

If you select a civic ceremony – you have to decide if you’d like the basic 17 minute government ceremony version, or if you’d like to personalize the ceremony with readings of scripture, readings of other literature, sand ceremony or unity candle or other ways to personalize your ceremony. Many marriage commissioners are able to assist you in personalizing the ceremony, but it’s best to clarify that they are able to assist you with your specific needs before booking their services.
